I haven't seen the movie.The book is interesting, but not edge-of-your-seat gripping. Gardner is clearly to be admired for making himself into the person he is today, but he also comes across as a bit of a hound dog/player.
The writing is OK but not great - much of it comes across as transcription of conversations with Gardner. There are frequent unnecessary changes of tense that rather put me off.
This story might well be inspiring to folks who are growing up in similar circumstances; for me it interesting rather than inspiring.
